Nel campo della difesa del territorio SiTI fornisce strumenti per sostenere politiche ed azioni finalizzate a far fronte e a prevenire calamità naturali.

In questo ambito di ricerca, SiTI e Politecnico di Torino hanno costituito, in unità d’intenti con il World Food Programme dell’ONU, l’associazione ITHACA – Information Technology for Humanitarian Assistance, Cooperation and Action, che si pone come centro di ricerca applicata a supporto delle operazioni umanitarie. Sono prodotte elaborazioni cartografiche a seguito di eventi calamitosi in tutto il mondo e implementate metodologie per consentire una valutazione preventiva della localizzazione dell’evento catastrofico e dei suoi possibili effetti sulla popolazione.
Le attività in questo settore hanno rilevanza a livello mondiale, anche attraverso il finanziamento di progetti europei e della Banca Mondiale.

L’Istituto inoltre si occupa inoltre della valutazione di interventi sul territorio nel settore dell’energia e, in particolare, delle fonti rinnovabili,attraverso nuove metodologie e strumenti innovativi, della sicurezza delle infrastrutture critiche, anche in contesti di pregio storico-culturale.
