In the field of the environmental protection SiTI supplies tools to sustain policies and actions aimed at coping with and preventing natural disasters.
In this sphere of research, SiTI and the Politecnico di Torino have set up, on the basis of an intent with the UN's World Food Programme, the association ITHACA - Information Technology for Humanitarian Assistance, Cooperation and Action, an applied research centre in support of humanitarian operations. Cartographic elaborations are produced following disasters all over the world and methodologies are implemented to allow a preventive assessment of the localisation of the disaster and its possible effects on the population.
The activities performed in this sector are of global importance, also thanks o the financing of European projects and of the World Bank.
The Institute also carries out research on security and safety of critical infrastructures and cultural heritage (museums, exhibitions and transportation of artworks).
